What is Dark Roast Coffee?
All of our little coffee bean friends start out the same way – as soft, spongy green beans. And, they smell grassy…not at all like the aroma of coffee as we’ve come to know and love.
It is the roasting process that creates the dark brown, brittle coffee bean we’re familiar with. The roasting time and temperature (as well as the expertise of the roaster!) determine whether the resulting roast will be light, medium, medium-dark, or dark.
A dark roast coffee bean has been roasted longer than all of his other bean brothers. And, FYI, these little guys do not have more caffeine than the lighter roasts. They are darker in appearance, but because they’ve been roasted longer, the caffeine content is slightly less.
The beans are shiny and dark, with an oily surface and a bitter taste. They are also lower in acidity.
You might see a dark roast referred to in one of the following terms. Remember that the dark roast coffee names are not necessarily consistent from brand to brand, roaster to roaster:
- New Orleans
What Does Dark Roast Coffee Taste Like?
When you venture to the dark side of coffee (roast, that is) you’ll find that the roasting process has developed the characteristics that are inherent in this dark roast: bold, rich, full-bodied, sometimes charred, always rich.
Dark roast coffee can be described as bittersweet or toasty, with chocolaty flavors. The oils that are produced during the roasting process result in a thicker brew, which is one of the things I love about dark roast.
If your palette prefers a light, it-almost-tastes-like-coffee + let’s add some cream type of experience, you’ll probably find our best dark roast coffee recommendations to be a bit heavy for your enjoyment.
But that’s what dark roast is all about, my friend.
How to Choose the Best Dark Roast for You
As a long-time coffee snob who will only drink a dark roast (always black, of course), I will recommend this:
Try a variety of roasts until you find the one that your palette responds to most favorably. And, there might be several that you truly enjoy.
For me, as of this writing, my favs include Peets Coffee Major Dickason”s Blwnd, SF Bay French Roast, both of which are highlighted below, and the bold selection from Tayst (only available in coffee pods).
And, I have to throw in my two cents about the method for brewing the coffee, because that can make all the difference in the java world, my friend. If you want a tasty, satisfying cup of strong coffee, learn how to prepare it in a way that will result in a strong cup of coffee. Weak, wimpy brews are not allowed.
